CIVIC AFFAIRS

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING OF. THE CITY COUNCIL. At last night's meeting of the City Council, tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided, and there were also'present: Councillors R. Fletcher, T. C A. Hislop, R. A. Wright; M. M. F. Luckio, E. Tregear, Jno. Fuller, jun., L. M'Kenzie, W. J. Thompson, A. R. Atkinson, H. Buddie, J. Godber, G. Frost, and W. H. P. Barber. It was decided that, notices, be erected round the Zoo threatening prosecution of persons ill-treating animals. The Finance Committee reported that they had received a letter from the British Empire Trading League (Sydney office) soliciting the council to purchase British in lieu of foreign goods.—Received. The Tramways -Department was authorised to purchase 12 special ■ automatic lifting jacks for emergency purposes. _ Oα tho recommendation of tho Tramways Committee it was decided that the wages of the dispatchers and timekeepers in tho Tramways Department be increased by 2s. Gd. per week, and that the wages cf a cash clerk at tho Thomdon Tramway oflicea be increased from £168 to £182 per annum, to bring the same into line with ttie wages of the other cash clerks. It was further decided that tenders be called for Wie of the steel and concrete galleries*K}iuired in connection with tho new switchboard at the lighting station. A compassionate allowance equal to six months' salary was granted to the widow of Mr. Jas. Priest, formerly chief inspector on the Wellington City tramways. The Legislation Committee reported that they had considered the Draft Hutt Road Bill, and recommended that the Bill as nmended bo approved. The report was adopted. The Tramways Committee leported with referenco to Councillor Wright's notice of motion re congested trainc_ at Courtenay Place, that a plan is being prepared showing a rearrangement of this intersection, both as regards tramway lines unci public conveniences, etc. As soon i s this is completed, it will bo forwarded for the consideration of the council.—The report was adopted.
