A meeting of the Labour Day Committee was held*in the Trades and Labour Council Chambers last night when tho secretary (Mr. L. M. A. Rearden) reported that the arrangements were all well in hand and that everything augured well for a most successful celebration of Laboijr,Day on October 26. At a meeting of the Hutt Valley Labour Day Carnival Committee, held at, Petono last evening, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. MTSwan). presiding, the following judges were appointed:—Children's events: Messrs.• M'Ewan, Cox, Fiercy, Whittaker, and Ben. Wames. Mounted procession events: Messrs. Scrimshaw, Smart, and Newland. Horse events: Mossrs. Messrs. Toomoy, Styles, James, and Kirkwood. Baby show: Dr. Wilkins and Mr. W. J. Gardiner. Timekeepers : Messrs. Blyth, Binns, and Jenness. Marshals: Messrs. J. Woods, Superintendent Lepper, Churchouse, Towusend, and Cox. The tenders of Mrs. H. Martin for the fruit and sweet stalls, and of Mrs. Davidson for ice cream, wore accepted. ' A social as a wind-up to the holiday is to be held in the Petone Drill Hall , in the evening under the direction of the Social Democratic Party, the proceeds of which are to be handed over to the local distress fund.
A mooting of the Petone District High School Committee was held last ovening, there being present: Mr. D. M'Kenzie (chairman), and Messrs. Kirk, Lockwood, Pawson, Taylor, Anderson, Brice, and "Wright. The Education Board reported that the special committee appointed to select a site for tho High School for the Hutt Valley and Eastbourne, after visiting five different sites; had agreed that the Flutt Park was the most suitable, and that negotiations had boon entered into'with the controlling- body, with a. view to acres for the purpose. Mr. Anderson suggested , that the time had arrived when the secondary pupils should receive their instruction at tho Potono Technical School, in order that .they .might have bettor facilities for learning typing, etc., and expressed tho opinion that tho present secondary school buiHing was unsuitable In replying the chairman intimated that he thought when tho pnpils were moved at all, it would bo preferable to move them to the High School at Hutt Park. No action was taken in tho matter, Mr. Anderson stating that he mentioned it in order that the question might bo considered b.v members.
Four ladies, a deputation from tho headquarters of Dr. Barnardo's Homes, ivhich have become famous for the rescuing of waifs and strays, are at presont in-Auckland. The party, which consists of Miss Rachael Norton, Miss Cosbe.v, Miss Garden, and Miss Monks, intends to spend a year in New Zealand, with the objeoD of organising new branches of the Young Helpers' Leaguo, which was founded t>£ the late Dr. Barnardo.
