Murdoch (Mayor of Kumara and an ex-county chairman) is tlie Reform candidate for the Wcstland seat. POLITICAL REFORM LEAGUE. (By Telegraph.—Sr&oioJ Correspondent.) Palmerston North, October 14. At tho annual meeting of the Palmerston North Branch of the Political Reform League on Tuesday evening, it was decided to ask the Prime Minister (Mr. Massoy) to give a policy speech hore before, tho election. The" following were elected officers:—President, Mr. J. Goring Johnston; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. Thompson, J. Parlane, C. N. Clausen; secretary, Mr. C. H. Whitehead; treasure! - , Mr. A. E. Clausen; executive, Messrs. S. Russell, W. Davey, W. Little, F. Pycroft, A. E. Bennett, G. Marshall, H. Howley, E. V. West, W. Gillan, J. Nairn, and C. Pickering. . CAMPAIGN SPEECHES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Waimats, October 14. Mr. Francis addressed a. large audience in the Oddfellows' Hall last evening, Hi 6 Worship the Mayor presiding. Mr. Francis spoke at length, aud received a very good hearing throughout. He defended the policy of tho present Government, particularly 'their land policy, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and confidence, on tho motion of Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mr. W. Miller. Palmerston, October 14. Mr. James Thorn, the Social Democratic candidate for tho Palmerston seat, commenced his campaign this evening. A large audience gave tho candidate an. attontivo hearing. Mr. Thorn, in his speech, condemned the Govornnient for withdrawing tho necessary mining legislation at tho behest of/ mining companies, and urged the prevention of all bogus unions and the reestablishment in tho law of indopenj dent unions. Ho opposed any interference with the secular 6ystem of editcation, and objected to the referendum Oil the I3iblo-in-schools question. The candidate received a vote of thanks. LABOUR ORGANISING. A meeting of all trades unions, the Social Democratic Party, the United Labour Party, and 'the Trades and Labour Council was ( held in the Trades Hall last night, some thirty-two unions and organisations being represented. Mr. J. Rigg was voted to the chair. Those present unanimously resolved to form themselves into a Labour Representation Committee to decide what seats should be contested at the forthcoming elections and to conduct the campaigns of the chosen Labour candidates. Mr. J. M'Kenzie/(president of the Trades Council) was elected president, and Mr. E. Kennedy wa6 elected secretary pro tern. It was resolved that the committee should, decide what city and suburban seats should be contested, and the meeting then adjourned until 8 o'clock nest Tuesday night.
