' | "You are a;, disgrace to your uniform," said the Magistrate to Charles Hector Dudley, a member of the First Battery of the ' Expeditionary Force, when sentencing'' him to" terms of imprisonment for three charges of obtaining money by false pretences. Accused pleaded'guilty to obtaining by means of valueless cheques, £4 from Christopher : Jansen, 12s. 6d. from Ralph Diehl, and £10 from Livius Chaffey. : • • Chief-Detective Broberg explained that on October 2 defendant had hired a motor-car from Ralph Diehl, and deposited a cheque' for; £10, drawn on a bank at Motiieka. : . He had represented himself to be the son of.a prosperous sheep-farmer, and said that he himself had donated £200 and some horses for!the Expeditionary, Force. 'AccusedJ-had given similar cheques to tho' two'other people victimised. Dudley had been before the Court previously for similar''offences. , The Magistrate sentenced, him to three months' imprisonment on..each charge, the sentences to'.be concurrent. .
