BREACHES OF AWARDS PRIVATE HOTELKEEPER FINED Tim hearing of the case against William Young, of Young's Private Hotel, charged with six alleged breaches of the Shops' and Offices Act, was continued before Mr. D. G. A, Cooper, S.M., in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon. Young was. charged with failing to pay three female assistants overtime, employing the assistants for more than ten hours, and failing to notify tho inspector within 24 hours thai; he had dono so. Mr. A.' H. , Hindraarsh appeared for defendant, and Mr. W. Slaughter for the Labour Department. .At the conclusion of the evidence Mr. Hindmarsli said that the defento admitted that there had been a technical breach of the law, and asked the Magistrate to treat it as such. Mr. Slaughter submitted that the offences should not be treated in such a light fashion. "There is too much slackness among hotelkeepers in this respect," said Mr. Slaughter. "They should have stated hours for work for their employees, and as long as they ignore this fact they will be brought bofore the Court." The Magistrate remarked that he could not treat the cases as technical Ift-eaches, but as this was Mr. Young's first appearance in court ho would treat the matter leniently iiid impose fines of £2 in each of three of the cases. Costs totalling £*' 3s. 6d. were allowed. OTHER CASES. ' William George Moss, a young man, was charged with tho theft of various toilet articles, valued at £10, from Kemptliorne, Frosser and Co., Ltd. In asking for a remand till Friday next, Chief Detective Broberg explained that tho accused had been employed as a storeman, and later as a packer, by Kemptliorne, Proseer aud Cα., Ltd. The romand was granted, bail being allowed in the sum of £25 and two sureties of £12 10s.' A young man named Georgo Bej'non, charged, with being a rogue and a vagabond, was, on tho application of Mr. P. W. Jackson, remanded till Friday next, bail being allowed in £10, with two sureties of £5. Erico George Dollar Eden, arrested after threo years, over in Brisane, recently, appeared charged with being a person against whom a complaint had been mado under tho Dostituto Persons Act, 1910, and having been served with a summons, did leave New Zealand with intent to make- default. Ho was remanded till October IC, bail being allowed in £50, with two surotios of £25. Mr. J.

F. W. Dickson appeared for the accused. For drunkennoss, Joseph Harris and Frederick Bannistor • were each fined 10s., or 48 hours. Three first offenders were dealt with. JUDGMENTS BY DEFAULT.
