ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
RUN OVER BY A MOTOR-CAR. INQUEST ON A FATALITY. An inquest was opened at the Hospital'by Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., yesterday afternoon into the death of James .Gillen, a married man, who was run over by Dr. Tolhurst's motor-car in an alley-way oIF Courtenay Place on Friday last. Gillen had been removed to the Hospital, but the injuries did not appear to be serious. Within 24 hours of the accident he died at the Hospital. -Dr. , Tolhurst gave evidence to the effect that.lie was driving his car up the: right-of-way to his garage on the Friday night, when he noticed tho car bump, but as there • was some debris about he did not bother. Ho found deceased, however, a few moments later, lying on ■ the ground badly cut about the head. After attending to his injuries, he had had the ; man conveyed o the Hospital. ~ ■ Dr. Hardwick Smith, medical superintendent at the Hospital, said that deceased had' remained at the institution in a semi-conscious condition until his death on the Saturday'night.' , In witness's opinion death was due to shock from the injuries received. Other evidence taken showed that deceased was an abstemious man, but that he might have taken liquor on' the night of the , accident.. Ho had recently come to Wellington from Auckland, having' been employed at the latter town-by Messrs. J. Chambers and Sons, engineers. , At this stage the inquest was adjourned till 9.30 o'clock to-morrow morning. ' ... ; A CHAPTER OF ACCIDENTS. ■| Quite a chapter of accidents is reported' from Pahiatua by our special correspondent. ' A bushman named Conn fel from a.wagon on the Pongaroa-Makuri lload, and one of the wheels . passed over part of his body, resulting hi his collarbone being broken. He is at present an inmate of the Pahiatua Hospital.. . ' . ■ A Marima farmer named Humphries was skinning a beast when the knife slipped and penetrated his leg above the knee, cutting an artery. A little boy named Knowles, from the Hukanui district, was brought into tho Hospital suffering from a fractured leg, while another little boy named Odgers was bitten on the nose by a dog at his father's residence, tho wound necessitating stitching by a doctor. . FOUND DEAD IN BED. • (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunedin, October 13. William M'Cready, a retired farmer, aged 75, was found dead in bed at Banfurry this morning. ■ Death is supposed to 1 have been due to heart trouble. . FATAL FALL IN A QUARRY.' Oaniaru, October 13. Alex. M'Culloch, a married man with five children, working in tho County Council quarry this morning, fell forty feet and was killed.
