ASSESSMENT COURT
. OBJECTIONS TO VALUATIONS. The Assessment Court resumed its sittings in the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. Mr. W. G. Itiddell, S.M., presided and ■ thero were with him Mr. H. E. Leighton (assessor Jor the Valuation Department), and Mr. T. Dwaii' (assessor for the City Corporation). Objection was made by Mrs. E. Young to the valuations of two properties leased by her in Salamanca lload. Lot 14 (frontage _113 it.) was assessed as follow: —Capital value, £2750; unimproved value, £2070; value of improvements, £680. Lot 18, capital vafu(9, £1450; unimproved value, £1030: value of improvements, £-120. Mr. Watson appeared for the objector and said that while Lot .14 had been valued by the Department at £25 per foot, a flat section . on. at Kelburn had been sold at £18 per foot. . Mr. Eiddell .remarked that Mr. Watson -was including the improvements to arrive at the £25 basis. This was admitted by Mr. Watson who contended that it was absurd to assess the land oven at £18 a foot. After further discussion the Court reduced the valuations as follow: —Lot U, capital value £2450'(reduced £300), unimproved value £1770 (reduced £300), improvements to remain. Lot capital value £1300 (reduced £160), unimproved value £880 (reduced £150),. improvements to remain. Messrs. Herdinan and Kirkcaldi© objected to the valuation of Part Lot 3, Block VI, Reclaimed Land, 35ft. by 75ft., whic'h were: —Capital value £6800, unimproved value £2800, value of improvements £4000. Mr. K. Kirltcaldie appeared for the objectors. The ■ valuations'were sustained by the Court. . Other valuations wero adjusted as follow:—Mrs. Eleanor A. Clayton, Lot 20 Talave'ra and Clermont \ Terraces, 35ft. by 161 ft: and 168 ft., capital value £1200 (reduced to £1170), -unimproved value £530 (reduced to £500), improvements £670 (to remain). Emily M. Lingard, Lot 4, D.P. 314, Wesley Eoad, 41ft. by 165 ft.: £900 (reduced to £040), £555 (reduced to £535), £405 (to remain). Harry Jheo. Brittain, Lot 5, off Clermont Terrace and Wesley Bead, 115 ft. by 67ft.; £1020 (reduced to £995), £535 (reduced to £500), £435 <to'remain).' . Walter E. Woods, Lot la, Talavera and Clermont- Terraces, 178 ft. by about 132 ft.; £Lo2o (reduced'to £1545), £1030 (reduced to £950)', £595 (to remain). " Thomas H. Easterfiold, Lot .18, Talavera and Clermont Terraces, 40ft. by '153 ft- and 161 ft.; £1375 (reduced to £1350), £560 (reduced to £535), £815 (to remain). • The Court then adjourned till 2 p.m'. to-morrow whon it is expected that the hearing of the remaining objections will be concluded.
