PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The fortnightly mcotiiig of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening. : There'were present: The Mayor (Mr.j J. W. M'Ewan), and Councillors Ander-i son, Findlay,- Trueman, Jones, Forsyth, List, Brockelbank, and Townsend. The Hutt'Park Committee applied for an advance of £30 on account of current year's subsidy. Councillor .Cox moved that the application bo granted; Councillor Anderson opposed the motion on the ground that the committee, had turned down ah offei from the Hutt Valley Trotting Club to ■ take ' this ground. Had they accepted 'that offer they would have had sufficient revenue forthcoming to assist tliem. On being put to tho vote-, the motion was lost. The Mayor, Councillors List, Cox, and Brockelbank voted for,, and Councillors Trueman, Jones, Findlay, Anderson, and Forsyth against the motion. It was decided to vote the Petone Technical School the usual grant of £30. ' Tho 'Minister of Defence wrote in reference to canteens on troopships, and stated.that tho whole question .was being. thoroughly' investigated. An application from the Petone Working Men's Club for now water and gas connections to tho new Empire Hall was granted subject to the usual conditions. : • . '.''.■'
Tlio Reserves Committee reported :•—' (1) That instead of using No.. 4 groundfor the purpose of making bowling 'greens, '.croquet lawns, tennis courts, and providing plots for schoolgardens, proposes that the ground adjoining the gasworks bo utilised for these purposes, there being ample ground available. (2) That an entr.-mce be made from the' Recreation' Ground proper midway between the present gateway and the north-east corner, and that the creek from tlio gasworks to the stopbank bo piped and the road forfnod. (3), That a fence bo erected from'the gas managers' house to tlio north-west corner of the ground at, bank, and a promenade road be formed connecting the Recreation Ground proper with the ground over the stopbank. . (4) That tho engineer mark off the'ground for tile various purposes and so far as the estimated expenditure upon works for the year will allow, prepare same..' Full provision is to bo made on : next year's estimate for the work. The recommendations were adopted. "
■ The engineer's report called attention to the fact that noxious weeds were, allowed to grow unchecked'on the properties adjoining tho Domain, whilst .the council was endeavouring to keep its land free. In order to keep the cricket pitches in order a mower, costing £9, and sufficient, hose that would cost as much more were recommended, to bo purchased. Tho gas manager's report stated that seven new services had been laid to which- four new lamps had been- attached. '.
