. THE WEEK'S EVENTS. '. Three games were disposed of last' week in the Working -Men's Club's annual handicap chess tourney, as follow :—Milesi won from Alexander, Larking from Coulter, and Perry from Jensen. • The position of the leaders is now: Featonby, 9i wins, 2i losses; Perry, &-3; Burgess, 9-4; J. Reid, 8-4 Key, 7—4; Gray, 7—5: Mowtell, 6—4; Larking, 5—4; and Milcsi, 3-r3. A committee meeting. is being held on Wednesday evening to deal' with outstanding games, and also to fix the prizelists of the current tourneys. - The third round of the Wellington South Club's finals was set down for decision on Friday evening: Loney, who received pawn and two moves from Allen, used the odds to , best advantage and established an irresietible game, winning strongly. AVaine, who received a knight from Purchas, was a. bishopand two pawns to the good when the game was adjourned for a second sitting. The remaining fixture, viz., Periott v. Berry, wa-s postponed, ae the latter -■ could not attend. Loney and Perrott are now leading, each having two : wins and an outstanding game to account for. The penultimate round is Echeduled for next Friday evening, the drawing being: Allen v. Purchas, Berry v. Loney, and Weine v. Perrott. Tile ladder match for Rung 4 between Armstrong (challenger) and Welton (defender) ended in favour r of the latter. The papers which came-to hand last week from. England gave the'scores of the British' Championship; Tourney to the end of the Bth round,' as follow:— Blackburne (%o well-known veteran), 7i; Yatos (the dofender of the title), 7; Gunsberg, Scott, and Louis,, each 5. Viner (tho Australian champion) and Dr. Schumer, each 4}; Loan, 3J-; Sparkea, 2i; Parry, 2; and Wilkea, U. At this stage there were three more' rounds to bp played, and Viner thus had a chanco of winning .a minor prize. Tho final results should be available in good time for next Monday's notes. .In referring to the competitors, the "British Chess' Magazine" for August snys: "Mr. Viher will represent Australia, and. hie efforts will be followed with wide interest. He comes with excellent credentials. In a recent match he easily defeated Mr. Crakanthorp, of New South Walos, who competed in the British championship contest at Richmond in 1912, -and finished in fifth place" (with the even score of 5J wins and 5i losses).
