The ratepayers in (the Palmcrston River district lield/n meeting on Friday niglit to arrive at a common ground for objecting to tlie new rating and classification. Mr. H. O. Mellsop presided, and said that two firms of solicitors had agreed to act for tho objectors at a fco of five shillings each. Mr. R. Edwards favoured presenting another petition for the abolition of tho board, and thougdt that three-quarters of the ratepayers would sign. Mr. Mellsop said that Mr. J. E. Fulton, engineor, had agreed to inspect the river at five guineas per day, with a view to acting for tho objectors. , It was resolved to again ask ! the Minister of Internal Affairs to abolish the board instead of referring the matter to a Commission, and to protest that con-compliance with the request will be undemocratic'and against the principles of local self-government. '
