SOUTH'BRITISH INSURANCE (5y Telegraph.—l'ress Association.) '. Auckland, October 8. At the annual meeting of the South British Insurance Company, Mr. Peacock, the chairman of directors, congratulated the shareholders oa the result of tho year's operations/which wore a record for tho company. Ho eaid that £30,0C0 had been added'to the rceervo fund, bringing-it up to £Z6O,CCO. In addition the board thought it wise-in the present abnormal state of 'business to set aside £ZO,OOO as a contingency fund. The action by tho Imperial Government, and-in a smaller degree by the New Zealand Government, in tho acceptance of a proportion nf the war risks, had eased the position in connection -with shipping and mercantile interest*. Christchurch, October 8. At a meeting of woolbrolicrs it was derided to hold the first wool sale here oil November 12. At the. time it was decided, to postpone, the sale to December V the brokers were influenced by tho uncertainty that then prevailed in the wool market, but t'bc opciiin" of the wool sales in London this week has disclosed a strong demand for cro«bred wools at enhanced prices. The recent reopening of eomo of tho freezing works has reduced the number of dry sheep that would havo been available for
shearing, but the present fine weather i« suitable for tho work, and no doubt before the sal© la held a fair Quantity of wool will have accumulated. . LONDON WOOL SALES. Thoro is great competition for all grades of medium and coarse crossbreds; but less demand for all grades of fine croffibreds and mennos. English manufacturers ore tho principal buyers. . Manufacturers arc Duetf with Government orders for blankets and khaki cloth. Twenty-five thousand five hundred bales of New Zealand wool aro catalogued. Medium and coarse erosebreds, all grades lid. per lb. higher; fine crossbreds, all grades, unchanged; merinos, Id. per lb. lower than closing rates at last sale. A Government proclamation has been issued prohibiting the export of wool to the Continent excepting Russia, France, Belgium, Spam, and Portugal." • W and G. Turnbull and Co., Ltd., have received the following cabled information from London, under date 6th instant:— "Pino wools unchanged. Medium coarse, 125 per cent.
