THE FIRST CONSECRATION
OF A ROMAN CATHOLIC CHUECH IN NEW ZEALAND. According, to Roman Catholic clerical law a church has to, be erected in some form of masonry (brick or stone) and entirely free of debt before it is consocrated. Otherwise when a new church is opened it is only "blessed," not "consecrated." It is said that the lirst new church to, be consecrated in the Dominion is the new stone church erected hi connection with the Greenmeadows (Hawke's Bay) Seminary (tho successor to the .Mcaneo Institute), which was duly consecrated on Wednesday afternoon in the presence of a large assemblage.. Coadjutor - Archbishop O'Shea was tho consecrating prelate, and the .Pontifical High Mass was celebrated by Bishop Grimes, of Christchurch. It is understood that the Hill Street Basilica (a brick structure) is now free of debt, and may be consecrated according to the laws of tho Church. Archbishop O'Shea will return to Wellington this evening.
