GERMANY'S OBJECTIVE

PROFESSOR HARNACK'S VIEW.. (Rec. October 8,11.40 p.m.) Amsterdam, October 7. Professor Harnack, the' distinguished German theologian, in replying to tho English theologians' manifesto, asserts that Germany inland is fighting really for only the hegemony of the world. Leading British theologians of all the Protestant denominations issued a reply to the German appeal to evangelical Christians, reciting the German view of the political causes of the war. Tho reply emphasised the salient points of the diplomatic negotiations, and expressed amazement that a document signed by German theologians whoso honesty and good faith were unimpeachable should deviate so strangely from plain facts. It could only be supposed that they were unaware of the story of the negotiations. The reply denied the allegations that Germans abroad had been ill-treated.
