JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. (Prom Out Special Correspondents.} WANCANUI. The building permits issued in the borough for September totalled £4887 in value. Last month, with only 1.06 inches of rain it was the driest September known in Wangauui for many years. The district all round is suffering through the unseasonably dry weather, which is seriously affecting the farming outlook, while in the suburbs many residents are already short of water. Plain cooking as a necessary preparation for farm and back-blocks life is now being taught to the boys of tho agricultural classes at the Wanganui Technical College. The local branch of the Labour Department reports that the position in Wanganui as regards unemployment is very satisfactory. Only iivo callers were reported at the office during the past week, and though at the end of last month a large number of painters were put off, only two of these have enlisted the aid of the Department in getting work. ( The formal opening of the new Dublin Street Bridge and the first section of the AVan'ganui East tramway extension is expected to take place in about a fortnight's time. The Gonville-Castlecliff Tramway Board is in a difficulty- concerning certain attractions For children in the way of swings, ocean wave, etc., which it has placed at its seaside terminus. Although it was the intention to get authority for this in. the Board's Originating Bill, the matter was overlooked, with the result that the Auditor-Gen-eral takes exception to the items as being without the authority of the law, and calls on the members to refund the £59 7s. 6d. to theTjoard's funds. - The board has decided to bring the matter hefore the member for Wanganui, with a view to having a validating clause inserted in tho Washing-Up Bill. MASTERTON. Eight members of the Masterton Fire Police, including officers, have handed in their. resignations to the Masterton Fire Board, as the outcome of niembers failing to agree to amalgamation with the Mr© Brigade. Captain Dixon, of the Fire Police, has handed over the plant and uniforms belonging to the corp« The sub-divisional survey of Faloon's Estate, at Kaituna, Masterton, has been completed by Jlessrs. Seaton, Sladdiii, and Pavitt, on behalf of the Government, and the estate will ,be thrown open for closer settlement at an early date. Six hundred sheep have already been donated by the AVairaiapa committee for the Poor of Great Britain, Ireland, and Belgium Relief .Fund. Eighty-seven criminal cases and \ seventy civil cases were dealt with at the Masterton Magistrate's Court y during the past quarter. Eleven applications for old age pensions were granted in Masterton during the past quarter. No applications were refused. - ' The war is haying a marked effect in distilling enthusiasm and regularity of attendance amongst the Territorials and Cadets in Masterton. CARTERTON. At a meeting of the Carterton Rifle Club on Tuesday evening it was decided to support tho nomination of Rjfleman \V. A. Tato, ae major, and Rifleman Cumpsty as captain. Messrs. J. Brown, Philip Kingi, and Clayton, three well-known- Natives of the Wairarapa,' are joining the Maori Contingent. A new bridges is being erected across ■Victoria Road, Dalefield, by tho Wairarapa South County Council. OTAKI. A meeting of representatives from the various district rifle'olubs was hold oh Tuesday, 'when it' was decided to lire for the Field Shield on the fourth Saturday in March, on tho Otaki range, if sufficient targets are available. It Was decided that each club fire on its own range for the Fresh Food and Ice Co.'s Cup, tho highest aggregate for two shoots to be declared the winner. A wish was. expressed that tho Government would quickly •".- equip a central range at Otalri. Mr. Glackin was appointed secretary, and Mr. Catloy chairman. '' r . Mr. L. Armitago nag left Otaki to take up residence in the Auckland district.
