THE MEAT TRUST.
SPECIAL LEGISLATION NOT NEEDED. In the Houso of Representatives yesterday Sir James Carroll' raised the question of need for the Government to take action to prevent a combination between, shipping companies and the Moat Trust. He expressed a hope that tho Government would act promptly and not shut the stable door after tho steed had escaped. Tho Prime Minister (the Right Hon. W. l< , . Massey) said that he had been watohing this matter for a long time, and that no man in tho country knew more about tho position than lie did. Ho could deal with the Moat Trust without making any alteration in the law: there would not bo the ■ slightest difficulty. Ho did not anticipate any trou« ble with tho Trust in Now Zealand so' loiiß as wo owned our own railways. . Mr. G. Witty: What about the private .lines vriu arq going to build P The- Prime Minister said that those lines would be only feeders to the rnaiit lines, and that all would be well while tne State controlled the main railways. Continuing, the Prime Minister eaid that he knew exactly what was going on, and t'hat if it had not now been so late ill the session be would have proposed /referring the question to the Agricultural and Stock Committee. It was, he proceeded, tho prerogative of tho Government to license abattoirs and slaughterhouses, and if they saw anything going wrong it was tho easiest thing in the world to refuse the licensee. The position was that if the Trust came to tho country and-entered into fair competition, there was nothing to be said; but, directly they attempted to got a monopoly, the State would interfore, and not a minute would be loef in doing so.-
