MYSTERY OF AUCKLAND HARBOUR. ißy TeleEraph—Frees Association.) Auckland, Octeher 7. No evidence was forthcoming to show how Alice Ward, aged 32, also known as Lindropp, got into the harbour when tho Coroner's inquiry into the circumstances of her death was commenced at tho morgue this ■ morning. Yesterday morning the body of the woman was found Moating near ihe Nelson Street Wharf, fully clad, and ck-sping-in her band a small sum of money. When the inquest opened this morning, a woman named O'Brien, living in a lane off Nelson Street, stated that she had known the deceased for nearly two sears, by the name of Lindropp. Some twelve months ago she was living near \vitne33, but latterly her movements had been , uncertain. Witness thought that she was aarried. She was rather addicted to drinking whisky. The police' are making inquiries into the case, owing to one or two suspicious mrcumstances connected with it. An examination of tho body revealed no external marks of violence, although on I the wrist of the hand m which fJie money was clasped there were found slight marks_ which might be consistent with the wrist having been grasped by an assailant. Deceased was known to the police, aaid it is stated that she had friends on tho scows berthed at the watevfroat, aaid -wss in the habit of. risiting them. There were signs of alcohol haying been taken.
DRAGGED BY A PONY.
' Pahlatua, October 7. An accident happeued in Pahiatua this morning, when a lad uained Horace Falloon, son of Mrs. FalJoon, of Pahiatua, received a severe shaking, some body bruises, and a scalp wound, as a result of being dragged along portion of Maugahao Road and part of Main' Street by a pony. The lad's foot got •hung up in the stirrup of the saddle. "When the pony was brought to a standstill in Main Street by an onlooker it' was expected that the boy would bo badl.y injured, but medical atteation disclosed the fact that no bones n*er« j broken. Young Falloon was unfortunate in fracturing one of his legs some months back by a fall from a pony.
DROWNED AT A CROSSING.
Hokitika, October 7. | A highly-respected South Westland Pettier named Frederick Chinn, aged 41, was crossing the Pukekura River with ■a load of timber on a dray, when' the vehicle overturned in the stream, pinning Chinn beueath. Deceased- was a married man, with three children. BAKER'S CaRT UPSET. Our Greytown correspondent reportß that T. Richmond was driving Mr. Holdcroft's baker's cart out to Morison's i Bush yesterday when the horse took fright at a fallen tree, and bolted. The .cart was upturned, and Richmond had I two of his ribs broken.
. MYSTERY CLEARED UP.
Invercargill, October 10. This evening the body of a. man was found in the estuary, badly decomposed. It has been identified as tnat of Martcll John Cockbum, who has been missing since September 16. .
A CHILD'S DEATH.
An inquest was opened by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.JL, yesterday aftornoon into the death of the two-year-old child Azalia King, who died whilo under-j going an operation at a private hospital, in Roxburgh Street, on Tuesday. Formal ovidenee of identification was Riven by the father of the. child who resides in Grey town. Ho said that in its infancy the child had- •swallowed some acid and in the resiiltant operation its throat had been closed.^ After taking the abovo evidence tl». Coroner formally adjourned the. 'inquiry. An infant named Little was discovered dead in bed with its mother 'at St. Helens Hospital in Coromandel Street yesterday morning. The previous day it had been alive and well. An inquest will be held.
