THE COST OF THE WAR
A MEMBER'S SPECULATIONS. The question of the cost of the war to New Zealand -was raised in the House of Representatives last evening. The "London Daily Tolegraph" recently published a statement to the effect that tho expense to■this country would bo £10,000,000, and during last evening's sitting of the House Mr. G. W. Russell asked if any reliability was to bo placed ou tin's estimate. The Prime Minister (tho Right Hon. W. P. Massey): Quite absurd! Mr. Russell said that unless our Ex.peditionary Force was away from Now Zealand a great deal longer than it "was expected to bo, the cost would not roach £10,000,000. The Hon. J. Allen (Minister of Defence) : It did not come from here. Mr. Russell: No; it came from London. Mr. Russell added that the cost would total £3,000,000 or £4,000,000. Mr. Allen: Too high I Mr. Russell said that after having carefully considered the .matter he reckoned the cost would reach £3,500,000; "but," he added "I do not profess to have the inside knowledge the Government has on the subject."
