BOMBARDMENT OF TAHITI
SITUATION WELL IN HAND
' His Excellency the Governor has' received information with respect to the announcement of the bombardment of Papeete by the German cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, to the effect that the gunboat 'Meo was destroyed, and a considerable portion of the town damaged by shell lire. The Governor has also received assurance from the Admiralty that they have the situation well in hand. AUCKLAND BUSINESS INTERESTS. Auckland, October 5. ■Some Auckland- firms have large interests in Papeete. All the important business houses are on the waterfront and include a large concrete building erected by A. B. Donald and Co. three years ago at a cost of £7000. Almost adjoining were the promises of a German firm. Donald and Co. have some hope from the fact that one could not be bombarded without damaging the other. The same firm is anxious in regard to its schooner Tiare TaporOj built at Auckland about a year ago. She was due to leave Papeete on a group trading trip a day or two before the date of bombardment by the Germans.
