LECTURE BY DR. SHELDON
The Rev. Dr. C. M. Sheldon, of Kansas; U.S.A., delivered a'iecture in the Concert Chamber, Town Hall, Jast night, the subject being "Life's Main Things." Dr. Sheldon's fame as an author, and the fact that the lecture was the last to be delivered by him in. the Dominion were responsible for a crowded attendance. Mr. L. M. Isitt, M.l'., occupied the chair. ;
in the .course of'some very interesting remark's, tho lecturer gave jpointed illustrations of how business in the United States was setting its head against the liquor traffic. In a great commercial institution in his own State, applicants for positions were invariably asked if they- partook of intoxicants, and an applicant who was forced to reply in the affirmative would be immediately stood aside. Other great business corporations were offering a ten per cent., increase in wages to employees.'who would sign the pledge. When business firms took the matter up like that he thought the end of the traffic was hi sight.- The decreasing us© of alcohol for medical purposes was also touched upon. Passing from tho Temperance question, Dr. Sheldon emphasised the necessity of things spiritual taking first place in the affairs of man if life was to be worth living. In his closing remarks, he expressed pleasure at the. warmth of his welcome in NewZealand, and stated that he would follow the result of the voting at the coming elections, and he hoped to see tho passage of a measure which would eliminate the liquor traffic from tho .community. At the end of the lecture a collection was taken up in aid of the Mayor's Patriotic Fund.
