A New South Wales paper contains, an interesting paragraph relative to some, experiments ■ which Mr. Hugh Downs, of Sydney, formerly caretaker of tho Day's Bay Estate, Eastbourne, has been making with the prickly pear at East Ballina, with a view to turning the pest to profitable use. Our contemporary says :—On Thursday we were shown' some spirit which- Mr. Downs has succeeded in extracting, and which he asserts has the samo explosive and inilammablo qualities as the best refined 'benzine. By way of a casual test ho poured out a fow drops and applied a match to thorn, with the result that they vanished almost instantaneously in flame. It is Mr. Downs'? idea, to convert the distilled spirit to motive power purposes, and in a day or'so he proposes demonstrating its efficacy in one of tho district motor : cars. The experimenter is sanguine of the most complete success, and claims for his spirit that it will not only givo better power results than benzine, but that ho will bo oblo to put it on tho market at considerably less cost. When his' investigations are finally concluded, it is Mr. Downs'? intention to acquire a largo tract of pear country in Queensland, where the spirit will be distilled in bulk by a gplicial plant, and placed upon the market as tho latest Australian industry. If you aro suffering from a Cold,' and experience) a tightness of the piiest. with difficulty in breathing, you should'" try,, "NAZOL 1 "; it will give you relief and remove tho trouble. Price. Is.
