THE SAMOAN ADMINISTRATION
Private letters received in Wellington from Samoa state some members of the First Expeditionary Forco have been appointed temporarily to official positions at tho islands. Mr. J. H. Robertson, of the local Customs Department, who was' recently promoted to tho examining staff, has been appointed Acting-Collector of Customs and Commissioner of Taxes. Under tho German administration these offices weresgrouped and the occupant received a salary, it is said, of £600 a- year. Mr. A. J t AVatters, another Wellington Customs officer, who has .lately been in charge of the shipping department of the local Customs branch, has been appointed to aot as.Assistani>Collector at Samoa, and it is understood that three other New Zealand Customs officers who went away with the forco have been appointed to subordinate positions. About a dozen Customs officers have joined one or other of the Expeditionary Forces, and about half the number are at Samoa. Those who went from Wellington include "Messrs. H.-L. Halliday, W: T. Buckmanton,'W. G. Mace, and J. V. Carley. It is reported that Mr. Coghlan, a member of the Forco, has been appointed to take charge of the moneyorder oflico at Samoa.
