An operation for appendicitis was undergone this week, in Wellington Hospital by Captain T. Watson, of A Company, 7th Regiment, who was going to tho front. It is a coincidence that Captain Cameron, whom' ho succeeded in the command of the company, was similarly laid aside by appendicitis last'month.

The death is announced of Mr. John Newton, one of tho best-known manufacturing'pioneers in New Zealand, who has been so many years associated with the soap and candle industry. The late Mr. Newton was bom .in Glasgow on June 23, 1537, and was in business as a soap boiler for many years in Glasgow before he came to New Zealand in 1885. Then lie brought out his wife and family and a manufacturing plant and started at Kaiwarra in 188u, where the works 6till are. At that time tho only'other competitors in the soap business were Kitchen and Sons, of Melbourne, whose New Zealand business was'bought oU' and the New Zealand Candle Company was formed, which was run in conjunction with Mr. Newton's business in 1893. and was founded by him. Mrs. Newton died throe years ago. Of the family winch came out with their parents in 18S5 those now living are Mr. Thomas Newton, of Hanloy, Staffordshire;' Mr. Alex. Newton, who was associated wiv his father in'tlie business'in Wellington; Mr. John Napier' Newton, who is farming at Ashburst; Mrs.'M'Duff Boyd, o! Hastings, Hawko's Bay; and tho Misses •Mar? and Jessie Newton, who resido ii Wellington... ~Sinco,i 1887. the lata.-iUry Newton had resided in Murphy Street, in what was a portion of old Government House. He was a member of tho first Caledonian Society, a former president of tho Commercial Travellers'/ Club; was extremely charitable in.au. unostentatious way; was known.to the -last generation of' Wellingtonians as "a good sport" .and a genial companion, and was also a keen buyer and good judge of pictures, of which he acquired, a valuable collection. He took a deep interest, but no active part, in politics.

Patrick Jas. Henley, motor engineer, of Napier, our correspondent telegraphs, has filed a petition in bankruptcy.

Mr. A. F. Street, a. partner in the firm of R. W. Cameron and Co., of New York, is a visitor to Wellington.

An official notico of letters patent granting-now titles to Earl Kitchener was published in the "London Gazette" recently. Tho famous soldier was elevated to the rank of an oarl in the last list of Birthday Honours. His full titles now are Earl Kitchener of Khartum, Viscount__Brobme ,of Broome, in the county of and Baron Denton of Denton, iu the county of Kent. There is a special remainder clause providing for the succession .to the titlo (in default of an heir) of Colonel Kitchener, his brother. Colonel. H. E. Kitchener has a sou. and a. daughter, 'while the late Sir Frederick Kitchener left a sou and three daughters.
