NEW ZEALAND OFFICERS AT HOME
STATIONS WHEN WAR BROKE OUT. Tlie following information regarding the employment of New' Zealand officers in England'six weeks ago, or soon after war broke out, has been received .at Defence headquarters from Major G. S. Richardson, tho New Zealand representative at tho War Office in London: — Colonel T; S. '.Smyth,". A.D.C.. N.Z.S.C., lately officer in command or tie Canterbury Military District, had been attached to .the Southern command. 1 ■ ; ' ■:>'■'■■'. Colonel E. S; Heard, Imperial Genera] Staff, lately Chief of the General Staff of the. New Zealand Defence Forces, had been attached to the War Office, and it was expected that his duties would keep him there for some little time. Major M..M. Gard'ner, R.N.Z.A., was temporarily attached to the staff of the coast defences at Harwich. Captain R. B. Smythe, N.Z.S.C., was at the coast defences on the Tyne. _ Captain C. W. Melvill, N.Z.S.C., being an Army Reserve officer, had tho prospect of being posted to the South Lancashire Regiment, and therefore of going with the Imperial reinforcements to the front. •■ . Captain F. H. Lampen, N.Z.S.C., was assisting at tho High Commissioner's Office in dealing with the enrolment of New Zenlanders in London. "; Captain R. 0. Chesney, N.Z.S.C., had the prospect of being called from the Staff College to the War Office in tho meantime, as Major Richardson would bo required for other duties than representing New Zealand at tho War Office.' Lieutenant ,J. L. H. Turner, R.N.Z.A., son of Colonel C. H. Tumor, of the Samoan Expeditionary Force, had been posted'to the 43rd JJngade, Royal Field 'Artillery, and Lieutenant H. A. Davies, R.N.Z.A., to tho 34th Brigade, Royal,' Field Artillery, both with Expeditionary Force. Tho two officers mentioned, therefore, aro probably already serving on the Continent. Major Riohardson, in his advice,.stated that there were then indications of many New Zealanders in the United Kingdom getting commissions in tho British Territorial Forces and Special Reserve. The arrangements made by New Zealand for tho composition and equipment of tho New Zealand Expeditionary Force, states Major Richardson, had met with -tho full appreciation of the War Office, their forward state being in a very largo measure due to the visit made by Colonel Allen, tho Defence Minister, to London last year, and to Now Zealand having been represented at the War Office since the earlj part of 1912.
