His Honour Mr. Justice Denniston has returned to Christclmrch from Napier. He Arrives in Wellington on Sunday morning for the sittings of the Court of Appeal. His Honour Mr. Justice Sim will reach Wellington from Dunedin by this morning's steamer.

The .position of Railway District Engineer at Christcliurch, Vacant by tho death of Mr. 0. Holm Biss, is to bo filled by Mi-. A. J. M'Credio, District Engineer at Invercargill, who will be succeeded there by Mr. C. M. Benzoni, now stationed at Groymouth. Superintendent Mitchell,' of the Otago police district (says a Press Association telegram), is retiring on superannuation, and intends to tako up his residence in Auckland. . He. has been "laiited six months' leave on full pay. Superintendent Mitchell, who joined the force in, 1879, was at one time- subinspector at .Wellington. In the Legislative' Council ■ yesterday afternoon, references were made to the late Hon. Thomas Fergus, and on the motion of the Hon. H. D. Bell, seconded by tho Hon. J. Duthie, the council passed a resolution expressing regret at tho death of the late-honourable gentleman, expressing its . recognition of his. Services to the State, and sympathising with his family in their bereavement. The Council then adjourned till the evening as a mark of respect to his memory. Mr. Partridge, Sydney manager for Messrs. Lever Bros., soap manufacturers, is in Wellington at tho present time. He is discussing with Mr. William Turnbull the form of the modified plans of the works the firm proposes to erect at Petone. Dr. Kendall, the throat, ear, and eye specialist, of Wellington, has been sent to Samoa, consequent upon. the outbreak of eye trouble amongst the New Zealand troops there. Mr; Donald Simson, a brother of Mr. H. Lan Simson (late of Hastings}, has been granted an Imperial commission, as a captain of cavalry on active service. ■ Mr. • Donald Simson is an old Auckland boy, and he served through the South African War as a lieutenant and as a galloper to: Colonel Thornycroft.

At last night's'meeting of the City Council the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) stated that since the last, meeting the death had occurred of Mrs. Atkinson, mother of Councillor A. R. Atkinson. She was 90 years of age and was one of the . oldest colonists, and was highly re-., spected throughout the Dominion. A resolution of sympathy with Councillor Atkinson in his bereavement was earned in silence. At the meeting of the Suburbs Defence Rifle Club last night the annual ropdft placed on record the names of Messrs. C. J. Fisher, D. M'Kay, and G A.
