PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Petone Borough Council met last evening, . there being present: The Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), and Councillors List, Cox, Brocklebiuik, Anderson, Jones. ■ . The. Port Chalmers Borough Council advised that in view of its electric light installation ;it had a number of gas lamps and posts with lanterns attached for sale. The matter was left in tho hands of tho gas ma.nager to report upon. ■"■■'.'. Messrs. A. D. Eiley and Co'.,' Ltd., wrote pointing out that they would havo to pay 25 per cent, more froight and insurance rate for war risks on the electrical installation for tho Potone sowerage, and asking the council' to meot them in tho matter. It was rriisolved to reply assuring the firm tliat the matter would be considered carefully by tho council when the. plant arrives, and promising a "square deal." A similar resolution was carried in regard to the Dominion Motor Vehicles, Ltd., who advised that tho price of the Mandsley motors had been increased, tho large ones by £30 each and tlio small oae by £20. - , . '. A request from the secretary of the Petono district High School Coruniitteo asking the council to set aside* a piece of ground for agricultural purposes was referred to the IlcGerves Cornrnittco. A deputation from the Petono Cricket Club who waited on tlio council in view of the proposed bowling and tennis pyewis to be laid out on tho Recreation Grounds by tlie council was assured that the council would hold to its agreeI'mcnt to provide three pitches for the ! club. 'Another deputation from the Petone Tennis Club urged the council in their Laying out of tennis grounds to construct grass instead of asphalt courts, and showed how the revenue) from grass courts would be greater than from asphalt courts,-as the club would use the former and not the latter kind. A lengthy discussion on this matter ensued, and as an application from St. David's Cricket Chib was mentioned, in which two wickets were asked for, it was eventually decided that these matters be referred to the Reserves Committee to roport, and thatthey meot on Satur-' day next on the grounds, accompanied by representatives of the- above clubs, and go into tha matter. It was agreed to donate.£s,ss. to tlie.Huntly Disaster Fund, and to opon a subscription list at the council offices. Tho question of the price of coal was discussed at length,'it. being intimated that , the last shipment cost is. par ton , morq than tho previous one, and the increase had been passed on to the' consumers by the gas manager. Eventually this action was endorsed, and it was resolved to ask for figures showing the actual amount received from the s shipment in auestion.
