PERSONAL NOTES FROM LONDON. London, August 13. ' Mr. Thomas Allen, of Auckland, is at present on a visit to Leamington Spa. . Mr.' Guy Featherstone, of Auckland, who saw service ia the Boer War, has joined the forces.' Mr: Thomas Harvey, of Dunedin, _i» on a visit to relatives at Gillingham, in Kent.: He returns to New Zealand nest month. Mrs.' Clifton Mogg and her inotner, Mrs. Stringleman, of Christchurch, are still.in Switzerland, and it is not known when they will return. Miss Eileen Sibbald returned to London last w.eek, after some exciting adventures in Belgium, where she was to have remained For some time. Madame C. Zerno, of Palmerston North, who arrived in June, has been obliged to abandon visits to Paris and Switzerland on account of the war; Dr.'Mandel, of AVollington, who ban been practising in London, hae joined the forces, and it is understood that ho is-to take duty on a battleship. Mr. Cecil A. Shirley, of Napier, who has been spending a few days in London,- is now in the- North of England, and staying at Challoner Grove, South Shields."
.Mr: Charles -A. Pratt, of Tauranga, who arrived in England last month on a combined business and pleasure trip, is staying at Wigginton House, Learn Terraco, Leamington Spa. •Mr. H. G. Field, .of Christchurch, who arrived last month by, the Otway, intends to do some motor cycling., He is , at present staying at South Merstham, Surrey. Miss Amy Sibbald, of Dunedin, who has been ill ever since she returned fronvthe Continent,' six months.ago, has undergone an operation for appendicitis, and is nowjnaking a good, recovery. Miss Mary Mackenzie, who was one of n-sketching' party to Abingdon-(Berks.), and then went, on to Belgium with Misb Nancy Loughnan, of Christchweh, and a party of English girls, arrived back in London' on "Thursday, after a very exciting time. Cox, of Ohristchurch, and their son, Mr. Sydney Cox, ivho arrived in May,, intend spending a few weeks.-in Ireland and Paris after touring England find Scotland. They will probably siiil from Naples in September for New' Zealand. : ; Several New Zealand ladies on the Contineut havo had great difficulty in returning to England. Mrs. Smiley, .who-: was staying in Rouen, had aboitt .£6o', but could not -get it cashed. She bad to borrow from her landlady and to come away without paying her bill. : Mrs. Durrad, of New ; Zealand, and Miss Bridges, who have both been in it-he -Melancsian Mission field for somo ■time,, are in England' on holiday. Greoushields is staying at •Llandrindod Wells, in Wales, where she is ■undergoing a course of medical treatment. Mrs. Greenshiolds, who is. accompanied by her daughter, intended to travel in Franco, Switzerland, andltaly. She probably goes to Scotland later in. tho month, and with her daughter returns to New Zealand by tho Otranto on December 4.. . " . 'Mr. J, J. Pago, of Timaru, who has been-over hero for four years with his mother and Mrs. ludcT, arrivod in London on Sunday from a tour of the Continent. Th9y had visited Italy and Austria' and were at Zuriclrwhen thenews arrived that all troops wero mobilising. They had to leave very hurriedly, and were just in time to catch the last train to France, en route for London. Miss M. Kane, of Wellington, spent a week in Egypt and two months in the South of France before coming on to England. Sinceher arrival she has been to Paris for a short eta-y, and now will remain in London until .September, when she has planned a motor trip to Chamoix and the Daupliine She returns to New Zealand some time in December, after paying another .visit to the South of' France. '■ ■ \ Mr. E. H. Goodfellow, of Auckland,
has been .taking a course in medicine and surgery-, at. Edinburgh University since last October. In that time he has secured six university medals, "distinctjon" in the First Professional Examination, and was awarded the Vans Dnnlop Scholarship of £100' for three years in medical botany, and noology. Hp is now on a motor cycling tour through Britain, rind .arrived in London from Scotland a' fortnight ago. ■ ' . Miss Helen Mackenzie, who has been travelling in Germany for a few weeks, arrived here on August 3. While waiting on a very crowded platform at Carlsruhe she came face to faco with her brother, who was also travelling on the Continent. They had no idea of seeing each other,. and ' consequently were much surprised and, pleased to meet at such a time. Mr. W. B. Fisher, of Wellington (Esquire of.the Order of St. John-ol Jerusalem), who is accompanied- by his wife, has been spending the Inst fortnight, with friends in "Devonshire, and shortly leaves for Scotland. Later on, , if their plans are not upset by the war. they hope to go to Paris, Rome, and other, places on the Continent, returning'to London before leaving for Now Zealand. .Mrs. Fisher, who is an "Honorary Serving Si»ster" of the samo Order, has been associated with the first aid and homo nursing work in Wellington foi the past fifteen years.
