At the annual meeting'of the Mangatainoka Athletic Society, held at MaiiKatainoka on' Saturday evening, the question of the advisability or otherwise" of holding the annual sports gathering on Boxing Day of this year proyoked considerable discussion. Prominent supporters expressed the opinion , that it would be preferable for members urn) donors to- subscribe the sum given in former .years to' the society's fund, to a fund for the .distressed in Great Britain, .as a result of the European ivar. . It was pointed out that the Athletic Society was different froni a racing club, in' that whereas racing clubs ■Rave ' employment, and 'also were a means of making money, which could be devoted to ' purposes for relieving distress, the Mangatainoka Athletic Society only paid its way under'normal conditions, and was therefore 'not in a position to contribute a sum to the Distress Kuiid; The',, president, Mr. G. W. Chatwin, remarked that.if the war was concluded iu a week's time he bad not the slightest doubt that, as a direct result of tli«"«var, there -would'be,'thousands in Great Britain who would, be in sore distress. He thought the nioncy usually spent on Christmas'.'enjoyment, would assist to'relieve this distress. . Mossis, R. A. Williams, and iB. J. Ben'gstoii also favoured not holding the sports, and agreed with Hie proposal to institute . a Distress (fund. A proposition to hold the gathering, and reduce the prize-money by half was lost by a!'large majority. It was decided to institute the Distress Fund, and also not tot hold the sports this year!... The .secretary (Mr. D. ' Vf. . Wilton}, was, authorised to collect subscriptions for the fund, which will be closed on November 20.
