CHESS
1 : INTER-CLUB GAMES. Tho annual fixture botween the Wellington South and Wellington Working Men's Chess Ulubs was played on Monday evening at the rooms of the Working Men's Club.' Mr. K Mace (president), in extending a cordial welcome to tho visitors, mentioned that they were about to play the ninth annual match, which was very satisfactory seeing that the Wellington. South Chess Club was only-formed nine years and a half ago. He had been told that the Working Men's Club would not be able to muster their strongest team,, and this .was apparent seeing that ho had been asked to take one of tho boards, (Laughter.) His own team had been. entertained most hospitably at Newtown last year, and they hoped that tho Wellington South players would enjoy fully the present return visit. Tho captains then announced the pairing, after which play proceeded rapidly, S2U boards being in use. Considerable interest was taken in. the game between Mi. Mace, president of the Working Men's Club, and 'the. Rev. Mr. Jenkins, vice-president of tho visitors, this being Mr. Mace's first appearunce, and also the first occasion that the Working Men's Club has. put a president "in the tiring line."*. The Rev. Mr. Jenkins had the advantage in the early stage, but Mr. Mace later on sue-, ceeded in equalising, and hnally in scoring the game, in the game between the two club champions, Mr. Barnes (W'.M.C.) won a pawn Irom Mr. Purclms (W.S.C.C.) in the middle game, and with this "slight advantage the former ultimately scored, though not without a lot of play, Mr. l'urchas's wide-know-ledge of tho end game enabling him to light a long "rearguard action" before striking his colours. With some of their loading players absent the home team were naturally very dubious about winning. They had some useful reserves, however, who played very steadily and surprised the critics, victory finally rest-, ing with the Working Men's Club by 12-J games to 7s. At the conclusion of the play, Mr. B. B. Allen, president of the Wellington South Club, returned thanks for the kind hospitality extended to his men, and for the very enjoyable evening that they had spent, after which cheers were exchanged by the two. teams. Of the nine matches played to date, eaoh side has won four, and one ended in a tie. The full score of last Monday's match is as follows:—

'The final stage of the Wellington South Club's annual handicap tournament was commenced on Friday evening, when the six competitors who qualified in the section-play contested the first of tho five rounds comprising tho finals. Perrott (receiving tho odds of Knight) won from Alien, and Loney, who received tho odds of pawn and move, won from Purchas. The fixture Weine v. Berry was, postponed, as tho latter could not attend. Perrott, sacrificed a bishop for a pawn, and thereby brought about a neat finish. JLoney's win was also weil deserved, as he gave up a Knight in order to gain his opponent's Queen for a Bishop, tho play in this pretty three-move combination being all forced. The second round of tho finals is scheduled for next Friday ovoning, the drawing being as follows:—Allen (Class I) v. Berry (Class IV), Purchas (1) v. Perrott (IV), and Lonev (III) v. Weine (IV).
