ATHLETIC SPORTS.
ON THE TENNIS COURTS OPENING OF THE SEASON BROUCHAM HILL CLUB. Over two hundred people were present at the Brougham Ml Lawn Tennis Club's Courts in Lloyd Street on Saturday afternoon, when the season was declared open by tho president (the Hon. J G. W. 'Aitken, M.L.C), who made a brief speech appropriate to the occasion. He congratulated members on the high standard.of play last season, when the men's senior, junior, and third-class championships had been won by the club, while the ladies had annexed the junior and third-class championships. In speaking of tho general healthy effect of lawn tennis.on the rising generation, Mr. Aitken'expressed the hope that the club would in the future, as in the past, do all in its power to cultivate tho tennis spirit among the younger people. 'It was satisfactory, to record that ten members of tkeclub were serving with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Samoa, and he trusted that the good wishes of that afternoon's gathering would be conveyed to thorn. After Mr. Aitken had driven the first ball over the net, the club's secretary <Mr. W. S. Howe) said he was pleased to note that the president, in common with other members, had . made great improvement in his tennis,, and was now able to place the ball over the net in good style at the first attempt. He congratulated Mr. Aitken on-having regained health and called for three cheers for him. (The call was warmly responded to. ' Tba vice-president (Mr. G. N. Goldio) then 'led in the sineing of the National Anthem. The Wellington Professional Orchestra supplied the accompaniment and played other numbers during the afternoon. , ■ * .'." The v.isitors, who included many intending members, and representatives of city ahd suburban clubs', .were entertained ;at afternoon tea.. Practice games were 'started and will be proceeded with to-day.. '. ... _ A.s showing the activity of the club, the handicaps are already posted and handicap matches will be commenced almost immediately: The olub. colours, which were considered suggestive of the Prussian' standard, have been altered to navy Hue and gold. - ; NEWTOWN CLUB. << _ At the Newtown Lawn Tennis Club's courts at Constable Street on Saturday afternoon, the season was declared open by the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke). In the course of a few remarks,. His Worship complimented the club on its sound financial position, and on the satisfactory condition of its membership roll. He also roferred to'the fact that several of tho members had taken service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Subsequently' members and their friends partook of afternoon tea and scratch games were indulged iu while the litrht remainod, good. ~ To-day a tournament is to be held on the,Newtown courts and on Thursday ovehing r the club will hold .a dance at the Century Hall. Kent Terrace, in aid of the Mayor's Patriotic Fund. ■ WELLINGTON CLUB.
