ON THE ALLIES' LEFT
TERRIBLE ARTILLERY DUELS STREETS PILED WITH DEAD (Rec. September 27, 5.5 p.m.) London, September 26. The "Daily Mows" , correspondent says the Germans last week-end left their trenches and occupied a village. The French, on.Sunday night, surprised tie Germans and drove them back to the trenches. Next morning the Germans shelled the village and the cavalry routed the French. . The same evening the French reoccupied. the village which was a shambles, the streets being piled with dead. Eight hundred, French wounded were taken to the hospital. Prisoners were taken and retaken hourly. In the neighbouring villages the Allies' left wing steadily progressed. The Germans in retiring used the railway and three trains passed before the French were aware of it. The artillery wrecked the fourth and destroyed, the track. The Germans made a 6tand at the stone quarries, and the French sheltered in similar positions. A terrible artillery duel continued each side hoping to wear out the other.
