TO MAINTAIN INDUSTRY
In all parts of'the Empire men who know the basic principles of trade and industry are Temiiidiiig the piiblic that a sudden extreme limitation of expenditure by any considerable proportion o( the population is an injury to the whole community. The body politic _ loses vitality by the interruption and diminution of the monetary circulation. If tho people lessen extensively their demand for goods, the supply must bo correspondingly out down in time. Production declines with a weakening market, and 'this means a reduction of employment. The captains of industry and .trade cannot maintain a maximum number of breadwinners in employment if customers by unwarrantable fear of the future put a severe restriction on trade. The importance of this elementary axiom of economics was stressed.by the Wellington Retail Drapers' and Clothiers' Association in a notice published yesterday.
