DAY'S BAY GROUNDS
SUNDAY CRICKET AND TENNIS. For some summers past Day's Bay has been: one of the liveliest as .well as . the most picturesque spots'about Wellington on Sundays. The late proprietors of tho sports grounds .'ucluded in what is now known a-s Williams Park allowed tennis and cricket to be played throughout Sunday, and no one' saw that there was much amiss in the indulgence in a little vigorous exercise, even if it were on a Sunday. Since last summer, however,' the grounds have changed hands, and are g now vested in the City Council, and tne question as to whether Sunday play is to bo allowed on the Day's Bay grounds is one that will have to be settled within the next month. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) was approached on the subject' yesterday, but said he did not care to give expression to any opinion 011 the matter until the question hadJieen submitted to the council. He stated that an application to allow Sunday play had already been received, and would in due cours? bo submitted to' tho "Reserves Committee, and afterwards to the council. Mr. Luke said that he had noticed in a recent London "Times" a discussion in the London County Council on the question of allowing tennis to be played oh municipal courts on a Sunday, and there, after an interesting discussion, it was decided that such courts would not be available for Sunday play.
