TECHNICAL EDUCATION BOARD

THE EDUCATION BILL: - ;; ' The monthly meeting of the Technical Education Board was held last night. The chairman (Mr. D. Robertson) presided, arid there were also present: The Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, 1 Messrs. J. P. Luke, T. C; A. Hislop, J. G. Fitzgerald, G. Frost, W. H. Field, and W. Allan. 1 The financial statement showed a debit balance of £385 Is. 6d., with .accounts outstanding, including capitation, •of £1357. ■.;■''•■ \ i The Wellington Master Plumbers' Industrial Union wrote suggesting certain improvements to the plumbing classrooms. The principal (Mr. La Trobe) suggested that many of the inaeter plumbers would be willing to loan various fittings. Ho also thought that the classes would be extended to 9.30 p.m. • ' It was decided to erect a platform in the plumbing room fpr sinks and baths, at an estimated cost of £6 10s., aleo to extend the classes from, 9 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. A deputation waited on the board from the Wellington Provincial Industrial Association, with reference to the Edtication Bill. A list of recommendations was put forward, namely, that a deputation consisting of the committee of the association and members of the board should wait on the Minister of Education to suggest various amendments to the Bill. One was to draw attention to the fact that boards of managers of technical schools, and boards of governors of technical schools, were not represented on tho Council of Education, alt-bough their servants were. An amendment was proposed to the claueo dealing with tho election of managers of technical schools. ; Mr. Aitken replied to the deputation, to the effect that the board was gratified to know that the association took 6uch an interest in the matter. The suggestions were practioally the eame as the board, and, almost every board in' the Dominion, had made to: the Education Committee. They had been considered by the Education Committee, and the chairman had told him that all the evidence to be taken had now been taken. That meant that so far as the committee was concerned the Bill had been considered. It would doubtless be reported to the House next week. It was a little late to go to the Minister of Education- now, and tho step wae not desirable,. as the Minister, be-' inc also Minister of Defence, was up to his eyes in work. He euggested that the circular should' be sent to the Minister. It was decided to put into writing the representations of the association, •> and forward them to the-Minister, with tho board's recommendation. Mr. Aitken also decided to, instruct the association, i? it was desirable, to meet a committee of the Upper Honse.
