I tender most sincere thanks to the members of your committee and the working parties for these gifts, which are highly appreciated by all of us." - Tho following letter has been sent to tho Mayoress, Mrs. J. P. Luke, by Lieu-tenant-CoJonel G. N. Johnston,' O.C. H.M.N.Z.T. No. 10:—"Dear Madam, on behalf of all the troops on H.M.N.Z. T.S. No. 10, I desire to express a very grateful feeling of appreciation for the many kind gifts which reach us at tho hands of Her Excellency the Countess of Livorpool, the Mayoress of Wellington, .and the ladies of your committee, and to assure you that they will be distributed as directed; Please- also accept- an assurance from me that the troops do realise that the ladies of their district }iave their welfare at heart, and that they reciprocate. tho kind wishes expressed in your letter." From Major J. H. Whyte, ' O.C. H.M.N.Z.T.S. No. 6 (s.s. Orari) cornea tho following:—"Dear Madam,—Wu have received your presents of chocolate,' cakes, dates, soap,' matches, trophies, and French and German books. All of these gifts will bo the cause of much comfort to tho men to whom the articles will be issued during the voyage. The ; men havo been apprised of your efforts and they desire me to thank your committee and to tell you how much they appreciate the good wishes of, the women of tlio Wellington Military District. And in thanking you I.must assure you that the'men's'appreciation, will be a lasting one, and that throughout our sojourn at the front tho men will always remembor Wellington's women helpers in our campaign. " Presents for the Troops. On Thursday'the Mayoress and some of t'lie ineiribors of tho committee, asfijeted by Mr. A.. Crawford and Mr. G-arrard, were very busy packing and sending comforts and small luxuries to tlie troopships for the benefit of tho men. It was aii extremely busy day for 'them, and a- considerable amount of strenuous , work was accomplished. Included in the' gifts for each man wero tho following:—lndelible pencil, writing pad- packet of envelopes, 1 each; packet of dates, Jib... packet of chocolate, , matches,,l box each; soap, 1 oake. The quartermaster-sergeant. was also written to-arid a-sked to see that each man. would get his full complement, as the committee'is very anxious that each should get his full share of everything that has. been, tprovided for ; his comfort and use. Croquet. , • The newly-formed Thorndon Oroi}uct Club will open its season on Tuesday afternoon next. The club is fortunate in having been ablo to secure- for play the- green lately used by the Tliorndon Bowling Club, iii Tinak'ori Road. Groat enthusiasm has been aroused, with the result that there is a full list of members. Owing to the indefatigablo enorgyi of tho secretary, Mrs. George Johnson, of Kclbume, and the dry. season, the opening day has Been fixed for an earlier date than was anticipated. The president, Sirs. T. Young, will perform tho opening ceremony. Everyone who has received a collecting card for tho Countess of Liverpool Fund is asked. to 'hand it in, as soon as possible ss tho committee wishes to have all accounts made up at oiico. Mrs. J. G. Stevens, the popular president of tho Otaki Ladies' Hockey Club, was on Thursday presented by the members with a valuable pair of pictures as a. token of the kindly interest displayed in the club. The speaker at the Young Women's Christian Association to-inorrow afternoon will be Mr. E. R. Harris. At the Y.W.C.A. Diamond Harbour Conference Mr. Harris was one of the leading speakers. Members who heard him there and other friends are looking forward with anticipation to this last opportunity of hearing Mr ; Harris before his departure from Wellington. An evening was given at , the residence of Mrs. A. James (Feilding) for Mrs. Bowden, who is leaving to make, her home in New Plymouth. Mrs. S. Fisher, on' behalf of Mrs. Bowden's friends, presented her with a handsome handbag. . . At the social evening which, wae held by members at the Pioneer- Club last night the musical programme arranged by Miss Putnam was contributed to by Miss Dall, Miss Anson, and Dr. Norman Hales with songs, Miss Grace Kennedy violin solos, and -the ■Misses Putnam pianoforte duets. Mrs. Mackenzie received members and, their "friends'in the absence- of the president, Mrs. A. R. Atkinson. Mrs. J. Hine is leaving to-day with her family for Toko (Taranaki). The annual social of the Karori Bowling Club was held on Wednesday last in the parochial Hall, Karori. A large number of members and residents were present. The first part of the evening was taken up with a euchre tournament, which was much enjoyed. _ Mrs. P. Kilminster won tho ladies' prize and Mr. J. Robb tho gentlemen's prize. Tho consultation prizes were won by Mrs. B. Burn and M>. Ji Bailey. After supper there was dancing. Mr. F. Spiers acted as M.C., and Mr. F.
