TIMBER EXPORT TRADE
A CHANCE TO WIN AUSTRALIA. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) . Taihapo, September 25. Last year .New.'. Zealand .exports of timber to Australia comprised approximately 40,000,000 superficial feet of riuin and 60,000;000 of white pine. According to Mr. M. Carpenter, manager of tho Hangitikei General and Co-opera-tive Timber ..Company,. which,., controls 6ome 40 mills on the 'Main Trunk line and elsewhere, theso figures are small wiien compared with those that must inevitably be-recorded during the ensuing twelve months. Mr. Carpenter pointed out to a pressman this morning that the timbers imported on a larger tcalo than jiny others by Australian merchants were Baltic deals and Oregon pine. While, the .war lasted, none of tho former could possibly bo sent out, and tho exportation of the latter would necessarily be restricted to a very great extent. When the- present stocks were exhaustod, Australia would be. compelled ' to look for other sources of supply, and hero would be New , Zealand's oppqrtun--ity to build up a tremendous timber trade with her bi§ neighbour. Rimu and white pine, were just as serviceable for all practical purposes as tho other two, said Mr. Carpenter, but Oregon pine and Baltic deals found a readier market, chiefly because of their prestige-, a prestige that New Zealand timbers had never had a chance to obtain. Ho was confident that ou rtimbers will now secure a footing that they can nevev lose.
