ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
A PRISONER'S DEATH. An inquest was held by Mr. W. G. Riddoll, S.M., yesterday afternoon into the death of Jessie Hay, a female prisoner, who had been taken ill at tho Terrace Gaol on Saturday, and who collapsed and died just as she had been removed to tho Wellington Hospital. Dr. Gilmer said that he had seen deceased on Saturday morning. She was then oxtromely ill, and sulFering from pneumonia. Ho ordered her immediate removal to the Hospital. Deceased died shortly after admission to that institution. Dr. Fyffe, who conducted the postmortem examination on the body of deceased, said that the cause of death was early pneumonia, probably coupled with another ailment. Deceased would be between 50 and 60 years of ago.'' A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical evidence. The Magistrate remarked that the evidence showed that deceased had received every attention while in the Terrace Gaol. DEATH UNDER ANAESTHETIC. . Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., held an inquest at tho Hospital yesterday afternoon into the death of George Thomas Goldsmith, who died whilo under an anaesthetic at the Hospital on Thursday last. Dr. Hard-wick Smith, the medical superintendent ' of the, Hospital, stated that deceased was admitted to the Hospital on August 30. On Thursday last Dr. Marehant was' to operate on him for some 110S6 trouble. The anaesthetic had been administered, but when semiconscious deceased commenced to struggle violently, and the administration was stopped. After the patient, grew quiet, another attempt was made, but deceased suddenly changed colour arid died immediately. ' Witness at once operated and massaged tho .heart, but could hot start it beating again. The cause of death was primary cardiac failure. Dr. Marehant gave corroborative evidence-'. The Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence. He added to the verdict that all necessary steps had been taken to endeavour to savo deceased's life.
. AN INFANT'S SAD DEATH. A sad case of a little child's death was reported' to the police yesterday. An infant named Ada Elsie Wilkin's, daughter of Douglas Stophen Wilkins, of 23 Windsor Place, went to bed with tts parents on Sunday night, and at an early hour yesterday morning it was discovered by tho mother to be dead. The probable causo of death was that the _ child was accidentally suffocated during the night. An inquest is to bo held. (By Telejrapli—Press Association,) Invercargill, September 21. Henry Newton, aged 40 years, was killed by a fall of earth near Nightcaps to-day. He was undermining a bank when the face came away, breaking his back. He leaves a widow and eleven children. , ■ Dunedin, September 21. John. H. King, jagod 69, resident of Pembroke, left Matakanui last Monday to ride home. On Friday the horse was .found in Thomson's Gorge with the saddle and bridle on. A search has been organised.
