MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
"PLANTING" LUXURIES FOR A PRISONER EX-PRISONER SENTENCED, Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court on Saturday. John Black pleaded guilty to secreting tobacco, cigarettes, tissue papers, and a newspaper in a place -where they could bo found by a prisoner, William Thomas, at present -undergoing sentence at the Mount Cook Gaol. Chief Detective Broberg explained that the charge had been laid under Section 30 of the Prisons Act, 1908, whioh gave the Magistrate power to fine accused £20 or sentence him to three months' imprisonment. Detective Andrews had seen accused and another mail in the precincts of Mount Cook.on Friday. Accused had climbed the ironwork of the prison works, and was seen to secrete a parcel in some clay there. Accused had been arrested, but his companion had escaped. The parcel secreted had contained three packets of tobacco, one dozen boxes of matches, three packets of tissue papers, and a newspaper. It had been addressed "Bill Thomas, from 'Swag.' " Accused had a long list of previous conviotions against him and had just been out of gaol two days. Accused was evidently not satisfied to be out of the place. The Magistrate: I will give accused another opportunity of going near his friend, Bill Thomas. He will be sentenced to three months' imprisonment..
YOUTH IN TROUBLE. Frederick Joseph Price, a youth, who appeared on Friday, charged with the theft of an order on Johnston and Co. for £15 Is., and a cheque for £2, both the property of Joseph Lane, and who' pleaded guilty to-the same, was further, charged with forging an endorsement, "Lane," on an order for the payment of £15 Is., drawn on Johnston and Co. Chief Detective Broberg asked that accused be remanded till Wednesday, as tho latter offence was an indictable one. Mr. H. F. OTHER CASES. Joseph Andrews was .sentenced to one months imprisonment for deserting from the Corinthic while tho vessel was at Lyttelton. John Brodrick or Broderick was fined £2, m default one month's imprisonment, for indecency in Parliament Grounds. On accused's own admission the offence was committed so that he might get locked up. Elizabeth Kempton, who was discovered sitting in the porch in the back yard of a house in Abel Smith Street shortly after midnight on Friday, was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond. Inspector Hendroy characterised her as being "everything that's bad,"' and "a nuisance to herself and the comimmity."_ She was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. For insobrioty John Sheriff and John Shannon were each fined 205., in default three days' imprisonment, and Harry Whittaker, Wm. Abel, and Harry Hawthorn each fined ' 10s., with the alternative of 48 hours'. Similarly charged, Guy Cockburn was sentenced to ono month's imprisonment. Robert Martin appeared on remand charged with eaving a vehicle unattended in Willis Street. Ho was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 7s. Mr. &. J. Fitzgibbon appeared for defend-
