The German corps which reinforced the Axistrians is now retreating. London, September 18. l'etrograd reports attribute the enormous Austrimi lobrbb J»rg<sly tg tfto "not that raw Landsturm troops aro often oluced in the firing line. In tha
recent fighting at Josefow, on the Vistula, in Poland, 30 miles west-south-west of Lublin, Russian cavalry enveloped the Austrian flank before it was able to deploy, while the Cossack batteries mowed down the entire formations of the leading companies. Whole battalions bolted and hid in woods. Badlydriven and ill-horsed batteries made a, feeble attempt to unlimber, and all the gunners perished. , There are indications that the shattered Austrianß are retreating towards Cracow, hoping to make a stand there until they are reinforced by fresh Gor* man troops. . REARGUARD ACTION BY THE RUSSIANS. (Reo. September 20, 2.15 p.m.) Petrograd, .September 18. The Russians at Jaworow, a small place in Galicia, thirty miles west and a little north of Lemlkrg, captured convoys intended for the_ Sixth and Fourteenth Austrian Corps, thirty guns and enormous quantities of ammunition. Five thousand prisoners wore taken. Tho Russians liavo won an important' rearguard action all along tho lino. Genoral Rennenkampf (the Russian Commander-in-Chief in Prussia) is malting extensive use of motor lorries to carry reinforcements. Over one hundred are employed, each containing twenty men, and travelling at the rate of forty miles an hour'towards tho Russian flank. Some of tho German howitzers captured at Lublin are now in use against the enemy. The Germans, in occupying the Kalisch district, ordered all inhabitants to enrol in the German army. The. men fled. Some of the fugitives were caught, and twenty of them hanged. GERMAN PLAN TO MEET THE RUSSIANS, (Reo. Sept-ember 19, 7.50 p.m.) Rome, September 18. There is an impression in diplomatic oircles that Germany has realised the impossibility of extensive operations in France, and will probably evacuate Belgium shortly, and concentrate her second line along the Belgian-French frontier, and push all her available forces against tho Russians, who are threatening the almost undefended Austro-German frontier. Advices from Vienna indicate that the Austrians hope in a forthcoming battle at Przemysl to hold up the Russians, who are concentrating in the vicinity, until large German forces arrive to crush the Russian troops from Poland. Russia haa completed the mobilisation of six million men. Only half a million are operating in Bast Prussia, and half a million in G'alicia. The centre army of nine hundred thousand i s advancing on Posen. Another two millions are hurrying westward from Siberia, by way of Turkestan and the Caucasus., The rest are acting as a reserve. 1 SIEGE ARTILLERY TRAIN CAPTURED., (Rec, September 20, 8.45 p.m.) Petrograd, September 19. The Russians have captured a siege artillery train of 36 howitzers, sent, from Breslau (the capital of Prussian Silesia), to attack Hargoroo. ADVANCE OP THE ALLIES' LEFT WING. (Reo. September 20, 8.45 p.m.) Paris, September 19. 'An official communique states that the Allies' left has progressed, near Noyan (north of the Aisne), and holds all tho heights on the right bank of the Aisne. Tho Germans, apparently reinforced from Lorraine, still hold their trenches. • In the centre the Crown Prince's army continues to retreat. The French advance from Lorraine continues methodically. Later aocounts state that both sides are strongly entrenched. The battle is proceeding at various'points along the whole line, as yet without decisive result.
