Argentina ia passing through troublous times. Economic conditions generally are Euch a* tall for the exercise, of tho utmost prudence, and the. reverses already sustained ae a consequence of more.or less natural occurrences have been aggravated by a serios of lapses from commercial morality , on' the part of persons in high positions.. Of these instances a few have been enumerated in a survey of tho situation by tho "River Plate Review." Amount them are "a local insurance company, tho manager of which disappeared with all tho resorves and funds; then an industrial company, an employee of which likewise disappeared with all the earnings for the year. Gufllcient to have raid a 10 per cent, dividend. Following theoo came a, momber of the staff of a- warehouse company, who forged tho signature of the president of tho concern, and put in circulation a number of bogus shares; ono or two banking institutions vjho?e directors ployed fast and loose with tho funds, and lastly a cooperative company, of which several of the leading employees falsified the yearly inventories, causing erroneous balancesheets to l>e published for three years. There are doubtless many more instances of a similar nature," concludes tho "Review," "but tho above arc the more prominent." They afford, however, abundant evidence of the urgent m>pd that exists for drastic action in the direction of securing an amendment of the law of the Republic with regard to eotnpiny management with control, and, incidentally, wo system—or look of system—of "'"lit.which makes such delinquencies possible. Oqetoms duty collected at tho port of Wellington yesterday ainousted to £1286 Is, .7d.
