uncertain future a serious attempt is to be made by the City .Council to enlarge tho Central Free: Public Library; which lias been cramped and restricted for some- time past on account of there being no epaco ■within the present structure for expansion. * In'the meantime an improvement h,as been almost .completed which is going to givo a little temporary relief. This iis tho construction .of. a new,entrance wing on,the western,side of the building near tho existing' entrance, whiclr-is.' to give improved and separate access.to tho. reference departments of the library on tho first floor, and cuts thorn off from the main entrance to tho public Teading arid newspaper rooms on tho ground', floor. "Whilethis "will be a distinct advantage to -.the public which uses the "reference-'branch, the new eh- , trance will permit of the old stairway being: dispensed with and the floors being extended oyer the eoace now occupied by the stairway well. Tho extra space!so acquired will bo supplemented by a mezzanine'floor, which has already been in the first-floor foyer, where a number of sets of shelves have been for the reception of that class':of book that is not in everyday use, but is on rare occasions inquired for and must be kept. The virtue of having this additional space, is. that.room will be available on the other shelves for books which deserve a place there. It should be mentioned that the new entrance has been erected in conformity with the additions proposed to be made to tho building in the future.
