POLICE CASES ALLEGED ASSAULT IN A HOTEL Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., heard a number of police cases in the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. William Leonard was charged with assaulting James Stephenson, so as to cause him actual bodily barm, and with using obscene language. Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for Leonard, and asked for a remand to September 23, also that the prisoner be allowed out on bail. Inspector Hendrey asked that the bail be fairly substantial,' as Stephenson (the injured man)'was suffering frp'm a broken head and other injuries. The facts of the case, said the Inspector, were that accused had gone into an hotel bar, and on being refused drink by the barman he had thrown a mug at him. It wa-s possible that the injuries might develop into something serious. Bail was allowed in £25, and two sureties of £12 10s. A CUBA STREET DISTURBANCE. As the result of a disturbance in Cuba Street among some men-o'-wars-men, Charles Richardson appeared charged with assaulting Frederick Cliffe. Two constables, gave evidence that they had seen the accused strike Cliffe. Richardson, however, called two witnesses, Cliffe and another, who swore differently. . The Magistrate said that, seeing that accused bore a good character, he would dismiss the information. VARIOUS OFFENCES. Charles Smith appeared to answer two charges, one of drunkenness and another that be was an idle and disorderly person, in that he stationed himself ; n Courtenay Place for the purpose of gathering alms. He was convicted and discharged on the first charge, and sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment on the second. John Taylor Marshall, an old man, was charged with committing a grossly indecent act at Lyall Bay. He was fined £'2, and ordered to pay costs £1, in default one month's imprisonment. Jamcß M'Gugan, a seaman off the Nairnshire, was fined £1, with costs 75., for refusing to obey thecommands of the master of the vessel while it was at Timaru on September 14. A first-offending inebriate; who had had his leg broken in Vividn Street on September 2 while in a state of drunkenness, was convioted, and ordered to pay medical expeses £1 lis. 6d., in default three days' imprisonment. For drukenness, James Gallagher was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, William Kean Horton fined 20s. or three days' imprisonment, and Charles Anderson and Matthew Murray each fined 10s. or forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Four first offenders wore dealt with. Civil. BUSINESS. CLAIMS FOR WORK DONE, Judgment was given by Mr. D, G. A. Cooper, S.M., in respect to two claims made by A. V. Lamb, brioklayer, Kilbirnie, against J. W. Easson and Percy G.- Easson, under the Wages Protection and Contractors' Lion Act, 1908, for sums of £88 10s. and £29 respectively for work done. In the first case, plain-, tiff was nonsuited with costs £7 4s. 6d. to defendant) and an order was made by the Court vacating the lien made by plaintiff againßt defendant's property. In the second claim, plaintiff was also nonsuited," with costs £2 2s. to defendant. An order. was again made, by the Court vacating tho lien made by plaintiff against defendants' property. During the hearing of the case Mr. A. M. Salek appeared for plaintiff and Mr. T. Neave for defendants. OTHER DISPUTES. . The hearing of tho civil case in which Win. Hy. M'Culloiigh, coachpainter, of Wellington, claimed £3 10s. for work alleged to have been done by him for John E,. Fitzgerald, motor agent, Wellington, was continued before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. After hearing further evidence, the Magistrate nonsuited plaintiff, with costs £1 Is. During the hearing of the case, Mr. E. 0. Lcvv'ey appeared.for plaintiff, and Mr. P. Coolto for defendant. Mr. W. G, Riddell board a claim by Walter Coombs, futter, settler, of Wellington, against John. Fulton Gay, farmer, of Koputaroa, to recover £30 for rent of part Section 10, harbour district, Ngahauranga, under deed of lease, dated Octobor 1, 1909. The sum of £3 15s. was paid into Court by defendant. The defence was the surrender of the lease. After hearing evidence, the Magistrate reserved bis decision. Mr. O. Beore appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. H. A. Machell for defendant. . DEFAULTING DEBTORS. . Gribble, £3 Is., costs 10s.; C. Pratt and Co. v W. J. Phillips and K. Phillips, £159 145., costs £7 135.; M'El.downey Bros. v. Paul Farris, £10 165., costs £1 10s. 6d.; F. J. Pinny, Ltd., v. Jas. Austin, £37 10s. 6d., costs £2 145.; Commercial Agency, Ltd., c. Geo. Anson, £10 ss. 9d., costs £1 10s. 6d.; same v. W. and E. Urocklebank, £14 45., costs £1 10s. 6d.; Te Aro House Drapery Co., Ltd., v. W. H. Hargreaves, 19s. 6d., costs 55.; same' v. John Smith, £5 14s. 6d., costs £1 3s. 6d.; J. Myers and Co. v. C. A.-Roth, costs only, £1 ss. JUDGMENT SUMMONS. J. Rapley was* ordered to pay F. Larway the sum of £2 on or before October 1, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment.
