GERMAN PATENTS

SUGGESTED REMOVAL OE PROTECTION. The desirability of removing the protection on German patents in this country was'urged by the Leader of the Opposition in the Houso of Representatives last night. Sir Joseph Ward asked if. the Government would introduc/s legislation removing all the German patent rights registered in this country. There was for instance -a commodity necessary in the .dairying industry—rennet—that might be manufactured here. It had always been imported from Germany, but if it were to be manufactured here the industry, would require some protection. There were, he believed, many articles such as this the import of .which had been stopped, but which could be manufactured hero. He suggested thatsDr. MacLaurin and Professor Easterfield be appointed a commission to inquire into and report upon the matter. '..-'- The Right Hon. Mr. Massey said this nfttter had already been under the consideration of the Government, which had communicated with the Imperial Government on the subject So far, however, they had notTeceived any-re-ply.- He, boheyed that Canada was in the same position. As soon as the Government got'a reply he would let hon. members know what could be done.
