CANTEENS ON THE TRANSPORTS
•' A .CANTERBURY QUESTION. Information regarding the letting of a contract for a dry canteen in the Canterbury troopships, at £4800, was sought in tho House of Representatives last ovening by Mr. G. Witty, member for Riccarton. Ho said that a sum of £600 had been collected in Canterbury and Nelson to supply articles for the canteen free, and It was thought that these would be sufficient'to last until the troops reached their destination. The Canterbury people were naturally ih'licnan' Tho Hon. J. Allen (Minister of Defence) said he was sorry that ho was unable at the moment to give a satisfactory answer. He know that somo contracts had been let, but part of them , had been annulled. He had only heard tho othor day ' about tho Canterbury subscriptions. Ho would have inquiries made and give further information later on.
