THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS [Bt Glßncob.l Bercola figures in the entries for both tho hurdles and steeplechases at the Australian Jockey Club's Spring 1 Meeting, but so far there is no word of the chestnut making the trip. Owners are reminded that nominations for all events at the Napier Park Racing Club's spring meeting close on Friday next with the club's secretary, Mr. J. E. Gleadow. The Avondale meeting, which opens to-day, is the commencement of the spring campaign in the north. Big holds are the order in most, of the events. In the Maiden Plate, six furJongs, the favourite may be Soltane, a full-brother to Colonel Soult. He is to be ridden by B. Deeley. Tho rider named will also have the mount on tho Bezonian—Lady Huue filly in the Avondale Stakes; on ; Mullingar in the Cup, and Monathol in the Maiden Welter. J. Deerey has gone north to steer Admiral Soult in the Grey Lynn Hurdles. Mountain Knight, runner-up to Woorak in the Chelmsford Stakes on Saturday, is owned by Mr. E. J. Watt. Ho has an engagement in the A.J.C. Derby, in which he will be ridden by W. H. M'Lachlan. The last-named is riding in great form since his enforced retirement of three months, and _ out of his'first four rides he rode two firsts and two seconds^ Messrs. E.. Geddes and M. Edwards have completed arrangements for another racing campaign in New Zealand, and will leave Sydney for Wellington on October 9 with six horses to competent the Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting at Addington, Christchurcn, oh November 2 (says the Sydney "Referee"). Mr. Edwards intends \to leave the Dominion on his return to Sydney about the end of November, and will therefore bo absent two months. He has nearly thirty horses in training at Windsor. The team will comprise; Denver Huon, Dillon Bell, Wallace Wood, Olive L., Adelaide-Direct, and Bright Cloud. At 'tho Moorofiold meeting on September 5 the Kogarah Stakes, six furlongs, was won-by Comedietta, a half-sister by Positano to tho Melbourne Cup winner .Comedy King.

When the stallion Troutbeck (Ladas— RydaPMount) was offered at auction in England a few weeks ago the reserve on "him was 18,000gns. He failed to reach it, and the Duke of Westminster is still his owner. Troutbeck's stud fee this .season'was £18. The Tetrarok's list for 1915 and 1916 is stated by a Dublin ■ paper to bo alieady full at a fee of 300gns. , King Georgo's colt Friar Marcus started a hot .favourite when he won the Prince of Wales' Stakes at Goodwood on July 30, but ho only beat the second favourite Snow Marten by a head. Mr. W. G: Stead's colt Ringform was entered for the Chelmsford Stakes, run at Randwick last Saturday. li he started, his weight would have been Ist. 131b., as against Woorak's Bse. 21b., so on that form he can have little chance hi the A.J.C. Derby. At Melbourne on September 4, the Full Court hold that a private letterbos in the G.P.O. is not a "place" within the meaning of the seotions of the Police Offences Act controlling betting. That decision was arrived'at.in Mr. Sol Green's' appeal against a fino of x £30' inflicted upon him in the Court of Petty. Sessions some- time ago. •■ M. Connell has been secured .to ride in" the Epsoin Handicap. M'Lachlan will be on Malt Mark and It. Berry will ride Bon Rove. There will bo a race meeting at Rosehill on Saturday, and among6t the entrants for the Rosehill Guineas, seven furlongs, are Biireter ' ind Mountain Knight. The New Zealahder Valhalla, who has given It.'J. Mason cause for anxiety, is not among the acceptors for the Epsom Handicap, nor has he been nominated for any other race at the A.J.C. meeting.* The death occurred at Messrs.. W.-B. and C. L. Thompson's stud near Scone on September 4 of the imported stallion Downsbire, by Ayrshire from Seadown, by' Orvieto from New Zealand, by Isonomy. Downshire was bred in England in 1904, and was imported to New Zealand in 1909, but at the dispersal sale of Mr. J. B. Reid's stock in January, 1912, he was bought for New South Wales for 600gns. Downshire-'s death was caused by being nast in Ms, bos, with the result that he broko his back. FIXTURES. Sept 16 and 19—Avondale Jockey Olub. Sept. 24 and 25-Geraldme R.O. Spring.
