AN INCOME TAX MATTER. . (By T«]e£raph-Prt>S3 Association,) Palmerston N., September 14. At Palmerston North Polico Court today the Commissioner of Taxes proceeded against E. Sutherland, ..a Native, for failing to supply assessment returns. Mr. E. Watson, chief clerk of the Land ond Income Tax Department; stated that the returns sent in were incorrect. Corrected ones had since been sent in. There was still about £160 taxes outstanding. For the defence, it was stated that tlio case was ono of absolute ignorance. Defendant could not speak English. No doubt defendant was guilty. The information showed that three times, the amount due could be claimed. A fino of £100 ami costs £10 16s. was imposed.
