The late Sir John Henniker Heaton was buried at Geneva. The New -Zealand High Commissioner (Hon. T. Mackenzie) and many friends attended a memorial service at St. Margaret's, 'l'he King telegraphed his regret and sympathy.—Press Association. A Press Association telegram from Hastings states tJhat Mr. John Victor Collinge, aged 18, a well known hockey player, died in a private hospital yesterday after undergoing an operation for appendicitis. Mr. Erie Waters, at present actingPrincipal- of the Nelson School of Musio, was a visitor to Wellington yesterday. The Principal, Herr-Lemmer, is at present on a visit to Europo, and it is not known when he will return owing to the outbreak of hostilities between his native country and England. Mr. Richard Eyre, Collector of Customs at Westport, has beon promoted to the same position at New Plymouth, vice Mr. J. H. Hempton, deceased. Mr. Eyre will be succeeded at Westport by' Mr. P. C. Rowe, examining officer at Dunedin. Mr. Eyro was formerly a resident of Wellington. Mr. A. J. S. Thomson, .manager of the Otaki branch of the Bank of New Zealand, left yesterday, on a three months' \iealth-recruiting trip. Captain H. M. W. Richardson adjutant of the sth (Wellington) Regiment,. "who is. laid up "with appendicitis, is improving, and has not had to undergo an operation. Professor Nicholson, of the London University, who was welcomed, by the, Astronomical Society yesterday, left for Nelson by the Pateena last evening to see the suggested site for the Cawthron Solar Physios Observatory. . At last' night's meeting of the Petono Borough Council, a motion of condolence was passed to tno relatives of the. late Mrs. A. Eraser, a well-known resident of Petone. - . , The death occurred yesterday morning of Mr. - Florence M'Carthy, of Greymouth, a veteran New Zealand journalist, who'for many years was tho editor of the'"Grey River Argus." The late Mr. M'Carthy was horn in Canada on January 12, 1834, and arrived in New Zealand in the early fifties. He was at one time editor of the "Wellington Independent," and with Captain Holt, subsequently established a Press Agency, which was ultimately supplanted by the New' Zealand Press Association. About a fortnight ago he had a paralytic stroke. He leaves three sons and two daughters.

Montague, of Auckland, arrived froni Gisborne .last night, where associated with Mr. Harold Gregson lie acted as judge at tho local competitions. These, Mr. Montague states, wore an .unqualified, success. Mr. Gregson arrives to-day, and tho two leavo -nest week for Greymouth to act in a similar capacity.. The Hon. Jas. Men, Minister of Defence, inspected the camp at Sockburn yesterday, and, left at ilight for Wellington.—(Press Association.)
