The Principal, Herr-Lemmer, is at present on a visit to Europo, and it is not known when he will return owing to the outbreak of hostilities between his native country and England. Mr. Richard Eyre, Collector of Customs at Westport, has beon promoted to the same position at New Plymouth, vice Mr. J. H. Hempton, deceased. Mr. Eyre will be succeeded at Westport by' Mr. P. C. Rowe, examining officer at Dunedin. Mr. Eyro was formerly a resident of Wellington. Mr. A. J. S. Thomson, .manager of the Otaki branch of the Bank of New Zealand, left yesterday, on a three months' \iealth-recruiting trip. Captain H. M. W. Richardson adjutant of the sth (Wellington) Regiment,. Eraser, a well-known resident of Petone. - . , The death occurred yesterday morning of Mr. - Florence M'Carthy, of Greymouth, a veteran New Zealand journalist, who'for many years was tho editor of the'"Grey River Argus." The late Mr. M'Carthy was horn in Canada on January 12, 1834, and arrived in New Zealand in the early fifties. He was at one time editor of the "Wellington Independent," and with Captain Holt, subsequently established a Press Agency, which was ultimately supplanted by the New' Zealand Press Association. About a fortnight ago he had a paralytic stroke. He leaves three sons and two daughters.
