GUM TRADE DEMORALISED
. AID PROBABLE. Some days ago the Prime Minister (Mr. Massey) stated in the House of Representatives, when speaking on the subject of unemployment, that he hoped to be able to inform Parliament shortly of effective steps to be taken by the Government to deal with the unemployment difficulty; consequent upon • the .war, and that so mo of tho proposals would relate to the gumfields. Since tho outbreak of tho war the kauri gum market has been completely demoralised, and there has been no sale for thfe product at a payable price. \ Mr. Massey informed a reporter yesterday that Mr. Greville, tho officer who was recently appointed to devote special'attention to the gum industy, and the settlement of worked-but, gum lands, had como to Wellington to confer with him on the position of the gum industry, and on the best means of tiding over the difficulties that have arisen, sinco tho war broke out.
