BRITAIN'S FIGHTING FORCES
INDEFINITE EXPANSION SPEECH BY MR CHURCHILL (Rec. September 13, 5.5 p.m.) London, September 12. ■Mr. Churchill, First Lord of the Ad-, miralty, addressing a recruiting meeting in the London Opera House, said 'Britain would during the next twelve months build twice as many battleships as Germany; and would also built four times the number of cruisers. Britain was prepared to build indefinitely if the need arose.
"By one of those dispositions of Providence, which would appeal to tlie Kaiser," added Mr. Churchill, "the nose of the bulldog is slanted backward, so that it can breathe in comfort without letting go. If we have/been successful in maintaining naval control thus far, there .is sound rdasou to. believe thatour chance of doing' so in the future will increase, and not-diminish.- ' "Also, no doubt , if we. set ourselves to it, we can place' twenty-five army corps in the field early in the summer of 1915, in an army which will demonstrate its superiority over the .docile sleep who serve the precious ambitions of despotic kings. ■ Germany has been the terror and bully of Europe, the menace, of every- small .State,' and .the perpetual, source of unrest. .Whatever we do, we Khali-fight for the freedonvof those races who have been subjected and conquered." - STANDARD FOR RECRUITS RAISED. ' (Rec. September 13, 5 p.m.) .' London, September 12, morning. It is significant of the response to the call for recruits, that the War Office has increased tne minimum height allowed for the infantry. ■'/:/; ■ v ~ ~ ■
