'An amateur in the manipulation of handcuffs was brought before Mr. I l '. V. Fraser, S.M., at Mercer on Thursday, and asked to explain why ho had' a pair of handcuffs locked on one wrist', and had to borrow a filo to attempt to remove them. The young man declared that he had bought the handcuffs in Newcastle, and having received some instruction, from an. itinerant "expert". in the methods of escaping from such restraints, had offered to give a private exhibition of his skill to the railway porter at Tuakau.' Even with the assistance of the porter, he had been unable to remove one of the manacles, and, having travelled to Mercer, he had called at a sawmill to borrow a file.. The tool was lent, but a message was sent to the local constable, and the latter, having his suspicions roused by the circumstantial story, referred the! matter to the Magistrate.. At Mr. Eraser's suggestion, the officer made inquiries by telephone, and being unable to obtain any evidence' except a confirmatory statement from the porter at Tuakau, he .asked tliei Magistrate to dismiss the case. . The obstinate handcuff having been forced in the meantime, the youth was advised to be more careful in his, experiments with instruments of the law, and was restored to liberty. .
