NOTES AND COMMENTS

fßi Glencob.]

Acceptances for the'first day's events at' the Avondale Jockey Club's meeting close, to-night. ' Don Francisco, who got on the winning list at Ashburton yesterday, is a three-year-old colt by San Francisco from Madowla (dam of Masterpiece). Black Jester, who beat Kemuonorein the fat. Leger at Doncaster on Wednesday, won two events of minor importance laet season, but does not seem to have been generally regarded as a likely classic winner. He is a half-brother (by Polymehs) to Jest, who annexed the One Thousand and &e Oaks last year.

So little rain has fallen during the past month or two that the tracks at Ellerslie are getting hard and dry, and a good downpour would have a very beneficial effect (says the Auckland "Star"). ' ' ■ - ■

A. J. M'Flinnj who had his collarbone broken through' Waterworks, falling with him in the Steeplechase at Marten, is progressing satisfactorily towards recovery, but will be unable to ride at the Avondale or Wanganui meetings. A meeting of the committee of tftio Pakuranga Hunt Club was held on Tuesday, whan the balance-sheet in connection with the recent patriotic meeting promoted by the club was discussed. The accounts put before the meeting showed a very satisfactory stato of affairs, and it was estimated that about £125 would be available for presentation to the fund. Mr. J. B. Joel, who won the St. Leger this week with Black Jester, had previously won tho event with Your Majesty. A private cablegram received in Auckland from Sydney this week states that the, New Zealand jumper Merrimax was heavily backed in tho Jumpers' Flat Race at the Kembla Gkujro races on Tuesday last, but the best he could do was to finish second.
